Frequently asked questions
No, you do not need a Recreational Sports membership to work with a swim instructor.
We offer 5-session and 10-session swim lesson packages.
Each session is a 45-minute focused experience designed to build confidence and support steady progress.
Life happens! If plans change, please let your instructor know at least 12 hours in advance. Whether a session is charged or rescheduled is up to your instructor's discretion. Instructors will wait 15 minutes after the scheduled start time, but arriving on time means you get the most out of your session.
Packages are valid for 6 months, giving you time to learn and grow at your own pace. If unexpected circumstances arise, our team will be happy to review and support you.
Your instructor will create a session plan tailored to your goals and guide you through progressions designed for where you are and where you want to go. Along the way, they'll provide encouragement to help you build skills, confidence, and a love for the water.
Yes! Sign up with a buddy for semi-private sessions. It's a great way to stay motivated, cheer each other on, and share the joy of leveling up together.
Our instructors are certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. That means you're learning from trained, experienced professionals who know how to make the water safe, supportive, and encouraging.
Absolutely! If there's an instructor you connect with, you're welcome to request them. We'll do our best to pair you with an instructor who helps you feel confident and inspired.
All sessions take place in our indoor aquatic facilities: the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center or Royer Pool inside the IU School of Public Health. These welcoming, well-equipped spaces offer shallow and deep-water areas that help swimmers build confidence as they learn, practice, and celebrate every milestone.
We have multiple facilities across campus, each with different parking options. Check out our Parking page to learn more about parking at the location you're visiting.
All Indiana University events, groups, activities, and educational, cultural, and historical observances welcome all IU students and other members of the Indiana University community.
